Cathkin Trust Newsletter
September 2024
Summary
In our first newsletter in July, we reported on the success of the 50th Jubilee celebration and on our engagement with the school since February. We noted that the school had to be fully compliant if we were to attract donors.
We also noted that our secretary had been assisting with record keeping and filing in a voluntary capacity, and that the Trust had been approached by the school for financial and practical assistance for the Study Program.
This Program provides supervised study sessions at the school on Saturdays and is specifically designed to support those Grade 12 learners who do not have adequate facilities to revise at home. When approaching the Trust, the staff also indicated their wish to provide a light meal or snack for the learners attending these sessions and if possible, some assistance with transport costs.
Study Program
As outlined in July, the school presented a budget to the Trust for consideration. We confirmed the Trust would provide financial support for the program, funding both the refreshments for the learners as well as helping with transport costs.
We are pleased to report that the school has run five study sessions, all of which have been well attended. Learners book a place on a Thursday for the Saturday session which runs from 10am to 4pm, after which all those attending the session are given a light meal or snack. Those learners who require it are given R10 towards their travel cost. So far, all the meals have been funded by individual donors.
The take up has been very good and has increased over the weeks. We have been moved by the gratitude expressed by the learners. These young people are clearly committed to their studies and deeply appreciative of the support they are being given to achieve their academic goals. Some of them expressed their wish for the program to run on a Sunday as well!
We feel sure that you would like to be part of this study program, the first project to be supported by the Trust, and appeal to you to donate what you can to this worthy cause. Every little bit helps: R10 subsidises one learner’s travel costs; R20 provides tea or coffee and a snack for one learner.

Website
Other news is that we are planning to set up a website. One of our Trustees is working on this right now, so we hope to be up and running soon. Watch this space!
With very best wishes
